Confused about the difference between kratom powder and extracts? In this article we’ll cover the differences between each and which one is best to choose.
What is Kratom Powder?
Kratom powder, also known as plain leaf powder, refers to the ground leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree. This tree is a tropical evergreen native to southeast Asia and a member of the coffee family. Leaves are harvested from trees, carefully dried, and then destemmed and deveined before being pulverized into an ultra fine powder. The primary alkaloid in Kratom is mitragynine, with plain leaf having anywhere from .5 to 1.7% mitragynine depending on overall quality. 7 hydroxymitragynine is a secondary alkaloid also found in powder, and is much more potent than mitragynine. However, it is present in much lower concentration often undetectable in chemical testing. These two alkaloids are thoughought to be responsible for the majority of Kratom effects. However, there a dozens of other alkaloids that are present inside Kratom powder that we do not know much about. These minor alkaloids may contribute to kratom effects more than we think.
What are Kratom Extracts?
Kratom extracts are much more potent than Kratom powder. These extracts are made by extracting main active components to concentrate them in the final product. The techniques for extraction utilize various chemical solvents such as ethanol, and target mitragynine for concentration. The various forms of extract include liquid shots, enhanced powder, and extract powder.
Liquid shots are a popular form of extract in the market. There is a long process of blending, filtering, and mixing the Kratom extracts with the liquid. Liquid shots are composed of Kratom extract blended with a food grade liquid mixture. The final product is a convenient liquid extract in a 10 or 15ml shot bottle.
Extract powder is the powder that you are left with after the extraction is performed. This raw powder is removed of residual solvents before being sold. Extracts can range in potency from as little as 5% to as high as 85% mitragynine. Higher potency extracts (greater than 25%) are not recommended for use as they are far too powerful alone for most consumers.
Enhanced powder is another form of extract that is very popular. A premium quality plain leaf powder is enhanced with an ultra concentrated extract powder to produce the final product. Enhanced powders are standardized to contain a specific concentration of mitragynine. These percentages are similar to the extract powders that are sold on the market. Generally enhanced powder contains between 10 to 15% mitragynine.
Which One Is Right For You?
What is right for you depends on what you are looking for in Kratom, as well as how often and how long you have been using Kratom. If you are a beginner, we would recommend you staying away from extracts and using plain leaf powder until you have become more familiar with kratom. Many people are satisfied with plain leaf powder and do not feel the need to jump up to more potent extracts. If you are a more experienced and regular user of Kratom, extracts can be a great option for you. Those with a high tolerance to plain leaf powder may benefit from using extracts. Liquid shots are convenient and easy way to use Kratom extracts. If you are on the go or simply do not have the time to prepare extracts for use, then liquid shots are the perfect choice for you. If bitter taste is also an issue for you, liquids can be a good choice over powder. Choose extract powder if you desire increased potency and enjoy the stimulating and relief effects of mitragynine. Choose enhanced powder if you want the full spectrum effect of plain leaf powder, while benefiting from the increased potency of the extract.
